Fiber orientation and fiber length modeling: The concepts behind the calculations

tl_files/connect_template/bilder/news/2014/Charles_Tucker_w110.jpg Autodesk® Simulation Moldflow® Insight software offers the ability to predict the orientation of fibers in a molded part, and it has recently added a capability for predicting fiber length attrition. This information is useful for both short- and long-fiber molding compounds. But what lies behind these predictions? This lecture will look at the concepts behind the modeling of fiber orientation and fiber length. There will be some equations, but the emphasis will be on understanding the ideas behind each model. We start with the original fiber orientation model of Jeffery (from 1923!) and work up to the latest models for long-fiber molding compounds. We also look at the newest addition to this area—a model for process-induced changes in fiber length. The overall goal is to help attendees make smart choices about which orientation model to use and to understand how to choose the material parameters in each model.

Challenges in the simulation of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts

Different composite materials have been in used for many years in the automotive industry to create components that have unique characteristics, such as being strong and light. The trend in using composite materials is accelerating to meet lightweighting requirements to meet the next generation of fuel economy standards. An interesting thermoplastic lightweighting application combines the use of continuous fiber composite material with injection molding. The continuous fiber composite material forms a lightweight shell, while the necessary support structure can be created by overmolding it with a thermoplastic, fiber-filled melt. This so-called thermoplastic laminate can create extremely lightweight strong parts that can be manufactured in large volumes.

BASF has introduced thermoplastic laminates and tapes as ULTRACOM™ Materials in 2013.

The presentation introduces the challenges for simulation to do predictive numerical simulations for this class of materials. Starting from draping, overmolding, warpage simulation to mechanical simulation all relevant problems will be discussed with practical examples.

3D coordinate measuring technology and analysis of 3D data in injection molding & plastic process chain: simulation and reality

This talk will give designers, mold and tool makers and experts from quality management and production an insight into the integration of industrial 3D coordinate measuring technology in modern injection molding process chains.

3D measuring technology supports and accelerates almost all areas in the injection molding, foaming and blow molding process from CAD / CAE engineering and tool construction, initial sample inspection report to assembly analysis and stress testing. With the optical 3D coordinate measuring system, ATOS allows a full-field measurement of prototypes, electrodes, molds and injection molded parts - contactless and independent of the dimensions. Compared to tactile measurement technology also difficult free-form contours are captured over the entire surface and in a short time.

For different component sizes and complexities the ATOS generates precise 3D coordinates for full-field nominal/actual comparison to CAD-data, for inspection sections and wall-thickness analysis and also delivers complete inspection reports.

The full-field measurement results guarantee a faster sampling of component as well as a targeted mold correction and thus reduce production lead times. For the standard quality control review both the measurement and the entire analysis can be automated.

In addition, with the GOM Inspect software, 3D point clouds from any 3D measurement methods such as fringe projection scanners, laser scanners, CT scanners and other 3D measurement systems can be extensively analyzed.

One focus of the presentation is on the comparison of the simulated warpage to the real geometry of a component to make the effects of different manufacturing parameters easier to calculate.

The ATOS 3D Digitizer is used worldwide in injection molding, foam molding and injection blow molding process chains as accurate, fast and robust measurement solution. ATOS combines high data quality with flexibility and is suitable for use in harsh production environment.
